GOLF & COMPETITIONS
The Palairet matches were very competitive, with the team missing finals
day, by a single putt. The spirit amongst the players evolved superbly
as success grew and I for one was hugely disappointed for the players
and Adam Bridgewater, the Palairet Captain and club scratch champion,
that we did not make that final leap. My thanks to Adam and the squad
of players involved for all of their efforts this year and wish them
all the best for the coming season. Please support them whenever
you can, it does make a difference if the players feel that the club
members are behind them.
I managed to play a few matches for the Plymouth Area League this season
and although we did not get off to the best of starts, I truly believe
that the team selected to play the final 5 matches could have gone
all the way and won the league. It is, as with all team formations,
the form, camaraderie and spirit of the players selected that produces
a team that also play for each other, thus breeding success. Nick Davies
and David Wright must be congratulated for all the hard work and dedication
they have put into the PAL squad, which I know has sown the seeds for
a successful team to emerge. Thank you!
For those members who do not play in the friendly matches, you are
missing out on a treat. The matches, although promoted as ‘friendlys’ are
very competitive and are held at some superb venues e.g. Burnham and
Berrow, Thurlestone, just to mention a couple. I have made many new
friends from playing in these matches and would urge more members to
participate in these very enjoyable days. My thanks must go to Mike
Green, our match organiser for his commitment and support to arrange
these matches. Mike please do not mention my round at Thurlestone,
I’ll buy you a beer!
The traditional Inter club matches have been held at home and away
this year, with the 3 Club Captains Day, between Yelverton, Tavistock
and Bigbury being on home turf. The weather was superb, the golf course
was in fantastic condition, the culinary delights were excellent and
the result went our way. What more could I ask for.
The Centenary match at Staddon Heights was also another day to remember,
but unfortunately, the result went against us. The trophy we played
for is of superb design and I would urge you to join in this annual
match and play for what is becoming a competitive, but friendly rivalry
to win, whilst celebrating both club’s Centenary from 2004.
I would like to thank Joyce and Mike Martin for their support by organising
and running the mixed competitions this year. I know that the days
were competitive, but enjoyable. You will know that Joyce was our Lady
Captain for the year and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate
Joyce on a great year as Lady Captain, but also for supporting me and
the club, through not the easiest of times for Joyce personally. Joyce,
well done and enjoy your well earned rest with Mike.
My thanks must go to Simon Wood, Martin Fricker and more recently to
Steve Dougan, for running the club’s Junior Section this year.
The club can boast of a talented pool of juniors, all looking for many
an honour in the golfing world. The junior team went ahead and won
the West Devon finals day at Dartmouth, and were runners up in the
League. Individual success was enjoyed nationally with Leon Fricker
placed 7th in the national boys competition, James Holt winning the
county Youth Championship, Ryan Fricker winning the club junior championship
and Ashley Reburn, runner up in the club handicap championship.
The club and open competitions this year were affected by extremely
unpredictable weather, especially during July and August, but when
we were able to go ahead and play, the competitions were well supported,
although two open competitions were cancelled.
Congratulations to the Yelverton scratch league team for winning for
the second year running, even more enjoyable on away turf at Tavistock.
Success in the Ladies Section was forthcoming from Gilly Jarvis and
Sue Pearman, winning the Willes-Little Trophy at Libbaton. Well done
ladies. A result to be cherished!
The Captains Evenings were a highlight for me as they did none other
than cement my belief that it is a fun way to enjoy your golf and welcome
new members into the club. We revived many old games such as the pink
ball, string ball, and the cross country adventure, all adding to a
mix of members being introduced to an evening of competitive entertainment.
My thanks go to all the members who attended the evenings and I genuinely
hope you enjoyed the events as much as I did.
What a great year for Yelverton in the South West Foursomes, with George
Frude and Chris Gunn winning the final, which was a great match to
watch by the way, taking the championship on the 36th hole against
Paul Isaac and Peter Franklin. I was also able to sponsor the competition
during my year of Captaincy, which gave me great satisfaction.
Other days to note were the Captain’s Prize day where yet again
the weather played a part, with the 1st attempt being abandoned, with
a “phantom rumour” and then some terrible weather conditions.
Still when the re-arranged day went ahead, we enjoyed a full field
of support in much better conditions.
The Guest Charity Day was a day to remember with £1765 being
raised towards my charities of St Lukes Hospice and The Children’s
Hospice. We secured sponsorship for many of the holes and the ladies
at the halfway house did a superb job in selling the refreshments,
which I know was well received by both members and guests.
Final words on the golf side of things. I had one of most enjoyable
days of the year with the Vets, who’s Captain Paul Bowen-Davies
made me feel very welcome, thank you to all and I must mention Tim
McSherry’s Professional Day which was, as always, very enjoyable
as was the Yelverton Pro-Am. The Alliance day was a superb event, for
all who participated.
