West Devon Junior Golf League - Group B - Title Decider Yelverton Juniors 4 v Staddon Juniors 1
Despite the apparent one-sided look to the scoreline, it was the
last 3 holes that ultimately decided this Group decider that saw
Yelverton's Juniors emerge victorious and with it a place at the
Championship Finals day, as Group B Winners.
Staddon came to Yelverton knowing that anything worse than a 3-2
defeat would see the end of their unbeaten league run and with
it the chance to top the Group at the end of their League campaign.
Needing the win, it was Yelverton that pulled off the first surprise
of the day when announcing that Team Captain, Josh Reeday would
participate in Match 5, which saw him partner the relatively
inexperienced James Dawson in the foursomes encounter versus
Staddon's Junior
Captain, James Bailey & Kieran Burley-Brown. This promoted
Frazer Reed to Match 1, which proved to be quite possibly one
of the most exciting matches that the League had witnessed this
year?
Frazer rushed into an early lead following a Birdie/Birdie start
although his opponent, Harry Trump, who had only last week claimed
the scalp of Club Handicap Champion, Dan Rosevear, soon fought
back with a run of 4 successive birdies of his own, so that both
players were in effect 6 under par "better-ball" after
6 holes. A Par, bogey, birdie run then saw Yelverton's Reed reach
he turn "all square", a closeness that would continue
right the way to their 18th hole of the day. With only one hole
separating them it was the impressive Trump (+2 gross for the day)
that managed to overcome the luckless Reed, as his 4 games played
this year have all resulted in a defeat! :-(
Frazer was however keen to point out that one 100% record gives rise
to another and somewhat surprisingly, his record of 4 games played/
4 defeats comes amongst an overall record of the Junior section
winning all 4 games that he has participated within, with a halved
match and a defeat in the games that he's missed or been omitted?
Games 2, 3 & 4 were always tight affairs with Yelverton Juniors,
Henry Chamberlain, Rob Lilley & Kieran Alder, all of whom had
progressed in the last year from the Club's Academy status, showing
some resolute play of their own as they closed out 3&2 or 3&1
victories, which at times threatened to get away from them as it
did not and with it the 4-1 home victory secured this was enough
to send Yelverton through to Finals Day!
