The "Mark
Davies Shield" Winner
The Monthly Junior Competition played in March was the second in this
year's Shield series and was played in recognition of a past and present
Junior Organiser, all in one! Many will know that our current Junior
Organiser is Mark Davies, who some might feel is a glutton for "punishment" having
previously fulfilled the role between 1992 & 1995.
Mark's return to golf and Yelverton Golf Club in 2007 followed a 12
year absence from the game brought about by family commitments but
a visit to the British Seniors Open at St Mellion in 2007 rekindled
his desire to return. His 13 year old son, George has recently taken
up the game and is an active member of the Club's Junior Section, so
Mark hopes to fulfil the Junior Organiser's role throughout the foreseeable
future.
In difficult conditions, as was shown by the CSS for the day being
+3, March's Division 2 winner (H'caps 29-54) was Dan Bailey, who having
previously won the February Competition and the Bryan Blaber Shield
performed admirably with a score of 39 points from the Red Tees. Well
done Dan, whose handicap has now fallen 14 shots from 54 to 40 in the
past couple of months.
However, the inaugural winner of the "Mark Davies Shield" has
been awarded to Henry Chamberlain, the March Competition's Division
1 Winner, who beat the rest of his Division by 3 or more points with
an admirable achievement, given the conditions, of 35 points.
Henry (pictured below), a relatively new recruit to the Junior Section
had only recently passed his 14th birthday and was competing in his
first Yelverton Competition from the White tees, which as many will
know is a stern test of an individuals golfing credentials. With a
resultant cut in handicap from 22 to 21 and a desire to build upon
this achievement, I am sure Henry will not only be a regular face to
be seen around the Course over the coming months but one of the future "stars" of
the Junior Section over the coming years, Well done Henry, keep up
the good work.
