Yelverton Golf Club

On a bright, but cold day we had 20 players, which was fantastic for the time of year, especially as several juniors were away for the Christmas break.

The format for the day was for the juniors to play all shots until the ball was on the green and then the adults would take over for the putting. This was a fun way to get the parents involved, although it certainly caused some stress for the juniors when some short putts were missed.

The overall winner was Joseph Orr, who played some brilliant long shots and was helped out on the putting by his Grandad.

We will now be back to normal with the junior lessons and all juniors will receive a letter with the dates of the next group of lessons.

Dartmouth away match

On Sunday 26th April Steve Dougan, PGA Profession at Yelverton Golf Club took 12 golfers from the Yelverton Junior Golf Academy away to Dartmouth Golf & Country Club for their first ever match.

The team ranged from just 7 to 12 years old and for several of the juniors it was their first game on a real golf course. Despite 1st tee nerves there were lots of great performances and many pars were made over the 9 holes. After a hard fought contest the match eventually finished in a tie with the scores 3-3.

The biggest win of the day was by Iain Couper and James Dawson who managed to win the first 5 holes to secure an impressive 5 & 4 victory over their opponents. There were also good wins for Heath Marker & Chloe Brandon and Jake Taylor Lewis & George Davies.

Joseph Orr & Adam Spencer, Kieran Alder & Jamie Collins and Eleasha Billing & Kira Penaluna all played some really good golf, but just failed to win their matches against more experienced opponents.

Steve thanked all the juniors who played the match in a fantastic spirit as well as the parents and family members who went to Dartmouth to support the team.

Elfordleigh away match

Yelverton Junior Academy played their 2nd match on Sunday away to Elfordleigh and had a great result winning the match overall 4-3. The contest was closely fought and lots of great golf was played around Elfordleigh’s tree lined course. Rob Lilley & Jake Taylor Lewis, Kieran Alder & Jamie Collins, Ross Cooper & Joseph Orr all won their matches. Iain Couper & James Dawson, Adam Spencer & Hannah Price secured a half and Heath Marker, Chloe Brandon, Eleasha Billing & Kira Penaluna just lost their matches, but all played well and will no doubt take some positives from the match.

All members of the team looked great in the new team shirts, which was sponsored by FCA South West. We had lots of great comments from parents of both teams and the bright yellow shirts and purple logo certainly stands out.

Elfordleigh home match

Yelverton Junior Academy continued their unbeaten run this year with an impressive 4-1 victory against Elfordleigh at home on Sunday. Many of our Juniors were playing off their new improved handicaps, but all played some fantastic golf. George Davies & James Dawson won 1up, Kieran Alder & Dan Bailey won 3&1, Eleasha Billing & Hannah Price won 1 up, Heath Marker & Kira Penaluna won 2&1 and Jake Taylor Lewis & Jamie Collins lost 1 down.
