Yelverton GC Adult & Junior Cup
August Bank Holiday Monday saw the annual staging of Yelverton Golf
Club's Adult & Junior Cup, an event that was first played in
1958 with many well-known pairings having previously claimed the
Trophy.
The format of Foursomes
Medal (1/2 combined handicap played from the White Tees) can prove
testing enough for the most experienced
golfers around, so as you can imagine many a pairing, several of
which were "father/son" combinations would have had not
only their golfing skills put to the full test, although come the
conclusion, I am pleased to report that no families came to any
harm in the staging of the event!
A somewhat unusual warm and sunny Bank Holiday Monday with fairly
gentle winds ensured that the opportunity for low scores was out
there and this was proven as the occupants of the first three places
recorded a net score of par or better. Although his father John
could not play alongside him, Iain Couper's stand-in partner, Brian
Robertson proved more than capable assisting Iain to third place
with a net score of level par, 71. The first two places however
were a fine testament not only to the progress made by two of the
Junior Section's more "senior" juniors, as 2010 will
be their last year within the section but also to the excellent
team bonding of this year's Plymouth Area League team, in which
all four have regularly featured.
Second
place with a fine two under par score of 69 was awarded to Tom
Watkins (7) & David Wright (6) a score that was only bettered
on the day by their playing partners Frazer Reed (10) & Bernie
Pennington (11) (pictured below) whose excellent four under par
67 saw them lift the Adult & Junior Cup, as pictured below.
Both pairs have been put forward to represent Yelverton at the
forthcoming
Devon
County "Graham Ruth Trophy", a foursomes event to be
held at Teign Valley Golf Club on Sunday 26th September 2010. Well
played and Good Luck.
